Santa Monica has unprecedented experience gained from using the Early Development Instrument (EDI) over four consecutive years across all SMMUSD kindergarten classrooms to measure how well the community supports children for school. On February 10, 2016, Patti Oblath of Connections For Children was invited to the Orange County EDI Technical Group to share about how Santa Monica is using data from the EDI to spur collective impact. Representatives from Anaheim, La Habra, Stanton and Mission Viejo attended to gain a broader sense of how the EDI has been used in other cities. These communities have implemented the EDI in all local school districts and are beginning to explore the range of uses for the EDI that might be applicable in each locale. Patti presented an overview of Santa Monica Cradle to Career, how the EDI data has informed the Youth Wellbeing Report Card, and how the data led to the Building Blocks for Kindergarten campaign to nurture children for success. A lively discussion followed about the similarities and differences among the communities, as well as next steps to build collective impact.
