How are children in Santa Monica doing? What can we do to help them thrive? These are the questions that Santa Monica's inter-agency Cradle to Career workgroup sought to answer by creating the community's first Youth Wellbeing Report Card.
The baseline assessment looks at 4 key areas that contribute to a person's wellbeing: physical development, learning, mental health, and social skills. On the surface, children in Santa Monica are doing well overall. A deeper look into the findings reveals some startling areas of concern, including:
- Only one-third of children entering kindergarten are very ready for school.
- Nearly a third of older youth report symptoms of depression.
- Alcohol use among older youth is higher than the statewide average.
The report card will help smC2C partners form action plans to address priority areas of concern.
